Emily Scott, Beaufort SC Boudoir Photographer: Why I Do This Work

I get asked a lot why I chose boudoir photography. Why this, out of everything I could do with a camera.

The honest answer is that boudoir chose me.

I started photographing women in 2011 and something happened in those first sessions that I wasn't expecting. I watched women walk through the door convinced they were going to be the exception. The one who didn't photograph well. The one for whom this wouldn't work. And then I watched them sit at their ordering appointment and cry because they couldn't believe what they were seeing.

That moment. That specific, unrepeatable moment when a woman looks at a portrait of herself and sees something she couldn't see before. That's the whole thing. That's why I do this.

I have a fine art background and I've been making art for most of my life. But nothing I've ever created has moved me the way it moves me to watch a woman see herself clearly, maybe for the first time in years.

There is so much noise out there about what women are supposed to look like, supposed to be, supposed to feel. I get to create a space where none of that exists. Just a woman, great light, and the truth of what she actually looks like when someone finally sees her fully.

That's my why. It hasn't changed once in 14 years.

I came home to Beaufort in 2025 specifically to do this work inside a studio I built for it. Bay Street Studios at 811 Bay Street in historic downtown Beaufort is the physical expression of everything I believe a boudoir experience should feel like. Beautiful, private, intentional, and completely yours for the day.
